On ShowTime, they have already announced Dexter Season 7 will be coming our way. At the time of this announcement they said there would be an 8th and final season. That is a long running series with a strong fan base and following. What really attracts such loyal fans who will keep a series going for 8 years? The initial story line is of course very important. There must be something of interest for a variety of fan types to keep them coming back.
The action, setting and ‘meat’ of the story must pull you in and keep you coming back for more. But in the case of Dexter, I think it is the character development, the continuous twists and turns that you did not see coming. We are a society that seems enamored with crime shows, CSI types, police work and in this case serial killers. The writers have to really get into the heads and heart of the characters and think outside the box ideas to keep a series going and keep the fans wanting more.
